Max Pescatori at the table, 2019

My story

Massimiliano Pescatori, or Max. I came from Milan to Las Vegas to enter the gaming industry. Not long after, I started playing poker. After many good results, I decided to pursue a career as a poker player. That was mostly in the cash games — more than one section of them.

After a few years I decided to try tournaments. Around 2003, tournaments became my main goal. I wanted to win them, and at the same time build the experience so I could go and play the World Series. In 2006 I won my first bracelet. After that, I kept playing the World Series.

On the felt

The last hand of 9 July 2006

Italy had just won the World Cup. Heads-up at the Rio, jack-eight of clubs. The river was a nine. First bracelet. The rest of the career is what came after.

A hand

9 July 2006, the last hand

WSOP $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em · heads-up · Rio, Las Vegas. Italy had just won the World Cup.

Hole · J♣ 8♣

  1. Deal

Heads-up against Anthony Reategui. I have J♣ 8♣. He has Q♣ T♦. The room is loud in a way only that summer was loud.

  2. FlopT♣ 7♦ 6♥

He has top pair. I have a gutshot and a backdoor club. The chips go in. There is no later street to wait for.

  3. TurnT♣ 7♦ 6♥ K♥

A king. Not my king. The bracelet is still a card away, or gone.

  4. RiverT♣ 7♦ 6♥ K♥ 9♦

Nine. Straight. First bracelet. I told my friends to watch Italy, then to watch me. That night they did both.

Notes

The bracelet

For the first six years the prize was a cup. Since 1976 the game has counted the gold.
